Two dead in Stevens County Trailer Fire

(STAFF REPORTS/Chewelah Independent)

A trailer fire outside of Suncrest took the lives of two people last week, the Spokesman-Review is reporting.

On april 1, an early morning trailer fire was reported to Stevens County Fire District No. 1 off State Route 291 between Suncrest and Tum Tum. Half the trailer was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters got there.

Stevens County Fire District No. 1 Fire Chief Mike Bucey said that due to previous medical calls to the residence knew the building had occupants. They eventually found one resident, deceased, on her bed and then a second male occupant, also deceased.

Neighbors reported hearing explosions come from the house. Bucey told the Spokesman-Review that the male resident was on home oxygen. The fire department did not confirm the source of explosions and said even aerosol cans can make explosion noises.

Bucey also told the newspaper there were no apparent smoke detectors in the residence.
