Former AD Dodge moves to position at Liberty…
Kyle Dodge has resigned his positions as athletic director and wrestling coach at Mary Walker High School in Springdale and has been hired as the athletic director of the Liberty School District in Spangle.
“Liberty started phoning me back in May when they learned that their athletic director was resigning at the end of the school year,” said Dodge. “I accepted the job because Liberty is a strong athletic contender in the 2B ranks, while Springdale will probably be dropping to the 1B classification soon because of its steadily decreasing enrollment. And, I live in Spokane, so it is a shorter drive for me to go to Liberty than it was to drive up to Springdale.”
According to Dodge, Springdale will continue to play an independent sports schedule through the 2019-20 school year. The Chargers will play eight-man football against 1B teams and a mixed schedule against 1B and 2B teams in other sports.
“I will be proposing to the school board at its upcoming meeting that they hire Dwayne Watts as the new athletic director,” said Mary Walker superintendent Rick Waters. “As soon as we have an athletic director, we will go through the process of hiring a new wrestling coach. We may be hiring in-house, because we have a couple of assistant coaches we hope will apply for the job.”
Watts has been a long time teacher and coach at Springdale. He taught and coached at Deer Park prior to accepting a position at Mary Walker.
The enrollment numbers used by the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) in 2016 to generate its 2016-2020 classification listings, Mary Walker at that time had 114 students in grades through 11. Liberty was listed as having 94 students in those three grade levels. Since then, enrollment figures have changed in both high schools. The new WIAA athletic classification numbers will be announced at the end of this coming 2019-20 school year.
