Smith, Collins Win Divisions at M-2 Mallet Tournament

Russell Smith and Adam Collins battled their way through brackets loaded with 3A and 4A wrestlers to win weight division championships last Saturday at the annual M-2 Mallet Tournament hosted by Rogers High School.

“This is probably the best we’ve done at this tournament over the past three years,” said Coach Patrick Mitchell. “For the most part, we wrestled the number two kids from the Greater Spokane League schools, but still, they were very good opponents.”

Smith pinned Brayden Schmick from Ferris High School in less than a minute of the championship finals to earn the tournament’s 152-pound title.

In his first match of the tournament, Smith pinned Wyatt Ginter from Pateros. Next, he scored another first round pin against John Ross from Mt. Spokane. That put Smith into the semifinals, where he pinned Daeri Alderman from Mead in the second round.

Collins won the 170-pound weight division bracket by pinning Richard Olsen from Mead High School in the second round of the championship finals. Collins opened the tournament with three pins, two in the first round and one in the second round.

Cougar 220-pounder Dustin Olson also fought his way into the championship finals, but had to settle for a second place finish. Olson won his first three matches of the tournament, but lost his last bout to Robinson from Rogers via a first round pin. Olson pinned his first three opponents. He had two first round pins and one second round pin.

Chewelah had two other medalists. Dustin Crowell finished fifth in the 138-pound weight division, and James Gilreath placed sixth in the 120-pound weight bracket.

As a team, the Cougars placed seventh. Among the teams they outscored were Lewis and Clark and Shadle Park. The only other Northeast A League team competing in the tournament was Medical Lake, which placed behind Chewelah in eighth place.
