Hanna posthumously awarded Silver Star for heroic action…
United States Marine Private First Class Rocky Hanna was posthumously presented the Silver Star for heroic action near the village of Ta Kien in the Quang Tri Province in Vietnam. Hanna was killed on Jan. 11 when he was with the element of a small patrol that was moving to ambush positions near the Ta Kien village. The marines came under a heavy volume of fire from a large enemy force.
Although seriously wounded, Hanna fearlessly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire and delivered an accurate volume of suppressive fire upon the enemy emplacements, killing four enemy soldiers. Hanna disregarded his own safety; he resolutely continued his efforts and the enemy broke contact. After this, Hanna passed away from his wounds. His actions and initiative inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow Marines. Hanna was a member of the 3rd Marine Division.
Hanna graduated from Jenkins High School in 1968 and had been in Vietnam for 10 days.
