Zags pick up Top-15 win in Jimmy V Classic…
Jalen Suggs returned in the second half provided No. 1 Gonzaga the energy it needed to rally past No. 11 West Virginia 87-82 on Wednesday in Indianapolis as part of the Jimmy V Classic. Gonzaga improved to 3-0 on the year and was led by Joel Ayayi’s career-high 21 points. Andrew Nembhard and Corey Kispert each scored 19 points.
Suggs, meanwhile was a swiss army knife with four points, five assists and six rebounds – most of that in the second half. In the first half it appeared he went down with an ankle injury but returned to the floor in the second half. He provided the size the Zags needed going up against the tall Mountaineers.
”Jalen going down and the fact that they were throttling us on the glass and throttling our offense for a while,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few told the Associated Press. ”That’s basically how I think a lot of our games are going to go. I don’t think they’re going to be a flowy as they were down in Florida.”
Derek Culver led the Mountaineers with 18 points. West Virginia led 33-24 late in the first half, but Gonzaga retook the lead midway through the second half.
This was Gonzaga’s second win of the year over a Top 15 opponent. It doesn’t get any easier on the schedule as the Zags will play No. 2 Baylor on Saturday in Indianapolis.
