NATIONAL NEWS: Space tensions grow as Russia tests anti-satellite weapon

(STAFF REPORTS/Chewelah Independent)

U.S. Space Command said that American and allied space assets are at serious risk after Russia test-fired a weapon-like projectile designed to knock out other satellites. The “non-destructive test of a space-based anti-satellite weapon” was used from a Russian satellite that was spotted earlier this year stalking a U.S. satellite that snaps photos of Earth for the Pentagon.

The satellite was launched on November 25 at a cosmodrome launch site 500 miles north of Moscow. The Kremlin said it was only used to check on other Russian satellites. Meanwhile U.S. researchers say it was an anti-satellite weapon.

“The spacecraft, created on the basis of a unified multi functional space platform, is launched into the target orbit from which the state of domestic satellites can be monitored,” according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
