Chewelah, Colville and Kettle Falls libraries change hours…

Due to budget shortfalls, the Libraries of Stevens County Board of Trustees has changed library hours at Chewelah, Colville and Kettle Falls starting Jan 1, 2020. In addition, the Board eliminated 30 staff hours per week in order to balance the budget.

The new hours in the county are as follows:
-Chewelah Public Library, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
-Colville Public Library, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
-Hunters Public Library, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
-Kettle Falls Public Library, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
-Lakeside Library, Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
-Northport Library, Tuesday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
-Onion Creek Library Station, Wednesday, 1-4 p.m.
-Loon Lake Library, Monday, Tuesday Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Per state law, the Library District cannot increase its budget by more than 1 percent per year (about $14,000 in 2020), without a vote of the residents. Since costs (e.g. materials, utilities) continue to rise at a pace of more than one percent, the District has had to be very creative over the years to balance budgets. Insurance alone increases by over ten percent per year.
