(STAFF REPORTS/Chewelah Independent)
Major changes have been made to the normal Jenkins High School graduation ceremony to follow the state’s social distancing guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The graduation ceremony will be live-streamed over the internet, whereas the live ceremony can only have five people at a time: the graduating student, two guardians or parents and the superintendent.
The graduation ceremony will take place on June 6, beginning at 10 a.m. Students will be able to walk across the graduation stage for video and a photo. Parents and students will be asked to line up in their cars outside of the school and groups of five students apiece will be led into the building. Cleaning practices and social distancing will still be observed.
The Hallway Walk and the Commencement will be filmed by a professional videographer and the commencement will be live recorded on Zoom for an audience. Students will be required to wear a face mask in the parking lot and hallways of the school. They will be allowed to take the mask off during the stage walk and picture/video with the diploma cover.
During the graduation ceremony, the senior class presidents will be reading the graduate’s names from a separate room as seniors enter the stage, while the Valedictorian and Salutatorian speeches will happen first and be recorded live in front of their parents.
Graduates will individually turn their tassels and throw their caps as part of the ceremony which will be recorded for the final edited graduation presentation. After the graduation ceremony, a final copy of the virtual whole group ceremony will be cut and edited from the individual speeches, the reading of the graduate names, individual senior videos, and pre-created videos of guest speakers, principal messages and superintendent farewell.
JJSHS is also hosting a Cap and Gown Pick-Up Celebration on Thursday, May 28 between 9:30-11 a.m. in the Jenkins parking lot. Each senior needs to arrange with their family to pick up their cap and gown packet at this time. All passengers will stay in their vehicles in the bus lanes as you enter the parking lot and as you make your way one at a time to the front of the school.
