No reports of dangerous activity by wolves…
The Stevens County Commissioners have released a statement saying that several wolf packs have come very close to homes in several areas of Stevens County. The Commissioners said these reports have been confirmed by their Sheriff Wildlife Specialist.
“While there are no reports of any dangerous activity or threatening behavior to persons an abundance of caution makes it prudent to raise the awareness for those people especially in the Orin Rice, Seigel Hill Road, Mingo Mountain, Valley Westside and Crystal Falls areas.”
The Commissioners told people to please be aware and be cautious regarding outside pets livestock and feed that may be a predator attractant.
Wolf attacks are extremely rare on humans in North America. In the half century up to 2002, there were eight fatal attacks in Europe and Russia and three in North America but more than 200 in south Asia. Recently a person who it was assumed encountered a den area climbed a tree in NE Washington when she encountered wolves and had to be rescued via helicopter, while in 2018 a cattle producer shot and wounded a wolf who he thought was becoming aggressive and acted in self-defense.
