Chewelah tests medal at prestigious Gut Check Tournament…
Coach Tim Slater split up his team last weekend, sending five wrestlers to the prestigious Gut Check tournament over on the coast and entering the rest of the squad in the Riverside Classic. Those who traveled to Kent ran into some of the Northwest’s toughest competition, but they held their own, placing 38th out of the 65 schools competing.
The Gut Check tournament has become one the toughest tournaments in the nation, featuring the best teams and individuals from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. The event featured 235 state placers, 85 state finalists and 44 state champions in 64-man brackets, and the Cougars met several of them on the mat. All five Cougars came home with at least one victory, with four winning multiple matches over 3A and 4A opponents, and one returning with a medal.
“This was a good experience for our kids,” said Coach Slater. “It was a good warmup for the upcoming state tournament. It is difficult to get kids into this prestigious tournament, but we were able to get five in this year. We hope to enter more next year.”
Meanwhile at Riverside, the Cougars earned four weight division championships and two second place medals with Coach Ken Downey running the show.
This week, the Cougars will host the Northeast B League’s northern division tournament this Thursday beginning at 5:00. This event will bring Davenport, Kettle Falls, Springdale, Northwest Christian, Selkirk, Republic, and Wilbur-Creston to Pein-Lynch Gym. Among them will be 21 ranked wrestlers.
“We should have about 30 matches,” said Coach Slater. “We will weigh everybody in and match them up as best we can. We are still debating whether we will wrestle on one mat or two. It will all depend on how many matches we will have.”
This will be the last home wrestling event for Chewelah. The fifth-ranked Cougars will travel to Tonasket for a two-day encounter with the top-ranked Tigers. They will face Tonasket in a dual meet on Friday night and then compete in the annual Apple Pie Tournament on Saturday.
Kaden Krouse walked onto the mat seven times during the two-day tournament in Kent’s Accesso ShoWare Center and won four matches to place sixth in the 170-pound bracket. He scored decisions over opponents from Chiawana, 5-2, Prosser, 11-4, and Peninsula, 14-5.
Jake Jeanneret won three of his five bouts, also in the 170-pound weight bracket. His three wins were all by decision over opponents from Kentridge, 8-1, Deer Park, 5-3, and South Kitsap, 1-0.
Gage Smith and Justyce Acosta each wrestled four matches, both winning two. Smith pinned two opponents from Sedro Wooley and Bonney Lake in the 160-pound bracket. Acosta won an 11-4 decision over an opponent from Central Catholic and pinned an opponent from Granger in the 120-pound division.
Wade Baker won one of three bouts, scoring a second round pin over an opponent from Peninsula.
Kristen Erickson, Zeke Crockett, Kaden Mackowiak, and Loren Olson won all of their matches to finish first in their respective weight brackets at the Riverside Classic. A dozen Cougars competed in the event and brought home the first place team trophy.
Erickson pinned three of her four 113-pound opponents, which included two boys, all in the first round. She also scored a 7-4 decision to go four-for-four for the day.
Crockett also pinned three of his opponents, while defeating the fourth by a 7-1 score. In his return to the team, Mackowiak pinned all four of his opponents in the 152-pound bracket.
Olson defeated his lone opponent twice in a two-out-of-three format.
