Chewelah Little League Sweeps Chataqua

The hard work paid off in a big way for the Chewelah Little League teams over the Chataqua weekend. Nine teams traveled to our town to play in the tournament and combined with the four Chewelah All-Star teams made for a packed weekend of baseball.

The Chewelah-A 12 & under team started their weekend with a win over Pend Oreille Valley on Friday night and continued to steamroll the competition with victories over West Kootenai and Brewster on Saturday. With a record of 3-0 in pool play, the 12u All-Stars went into championship play as the #1 seed and faced the opposite pool #2 seed Chewelah B team. A close game in the beginning, however the Chewelah A team pulled away in the later innings for the win and advanced to the championship game versus Brewster on Sunday afternoon. The Chewelah B team dropped into play for 3rd/4th place against Chelan.

Meanwhile the Chewelah-A 10 & under team were doing their own roadwork against Pend Oreille Valley, Deer Park/Riverside, and Spokane. Putting up convincing wins against all three opponents, the 10 & under boys also notched 3 wins and no losses on their way to championship play on Sunday in the 395 showdown against Colville.

The championship game for the Chewelah 10u against Colville did not start according to plan. With only one run being scored against Colville in the entire tournament, a defensive battle was on the horizon and Colville put up two runs in the first inning. Chewelah was able to bring home a single run in the first, but was not able to put together an offense over the next few innings. At the end of the fourth inning, Chewelah looked at the scoreboard and read Colville 11, Chewelah 1. In the 5th inning Chewelah’s defense held their opponent scoreless and was able to piece together 5 runs to make it a 11-5 ballgame going into the 6th inning. Again Colville went dry on offense and gave the momentum to the home team with the last at-bat. The young Chewelah boys were patient at the plate and pushed runners across the plate until the scoreboard read 11-11 with 2 outs. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Chewelah was able to single in the winning run in front of a deafening home crowd and take home the 1st place hardware.

The championship game for the 12 & under teams capped off the tournament with the Chewelah-A and Brewster in a rematch. See the article by Geno Ludwig on Page 6 for a recap of this championship game.

The Chewelah B versus Chelan game for 3rd/4th place saw strong defense from both teams. At the end of regulation play the score was tied and played until the 10th inning before a Chelan slugger pounded a 2 out pitch over the fence and give Chewelah B a 4th place finish.

This year the Chataqua baseball tournament organizers started a sportsmanship award to be presented by the Carpenter family in honor of Mike Carpenter. The Mike Carpenter Sportsmanship Award represents quality character, good sportsmanship, and a positive attitude regardless of winning or losing. This year the Carpenter family presented the award to the Spokane Mariners 10 & under team.

The tournament organizers would like to recognize all of the volunteers that helped make the tournament possible. The volunteer umpires did an excellent job and saved the Little League program hundreds of dollars. A high-five to the grounds crew for the excellent playing fields. Nice work Wally & Gitch. Thanks goes out to all the labor help and the donation from Mike McMillan we had on Sunday morning getting the fields dry enough to play. Finally, thank you Bill Allen for the wonderful team programs he put together. See you all next year.
