FRESH GROUNDS: Nine Mile Falls coffee stand opens during pandemic with friendly smiles…

Chewelah graduate Morgan Henderson had always wanted to start her own business. Having worked in the coffee industry for 12 years, she had grown to love building relationships with customers.

“The coffee industry has an amazing culture, and endless knowledge to perfect the craft,” Henderson said. “I love building relationships with the customers. Anyone who works in hospitality knows you make a lifetime of friends and some you end up considering family.”

Henderson started at Java Jazz in Chewelah, which is now Rozy’z, working for Peggy Richmond at age 15.

“I owe a lot to that amazing woman,” Henderson said.

On May 22, Henderson’s dream of being a business owner became a reality as she opened NorthWild Coffee in Nine Mile Falls.

“Getting the location was the coolest part,” Henderson said. “I’d drive through to visit my family and always thought it was a great area for a stand, and before I knew it, it was getting built. Getting open had some hurdles, but I had an awesome support system.”

The coffee stand, located at 5920, Highway 291 in Nine Mile Falls, had the interesting hurdle of opening during a pandemic. But the support from the surrounding community has been heartening for Henderson.

“Opening during the pandemic was interesting,” she said. “Busy hours changed, and everyone has been very patient and understanding. Even in these hard times, people like getting out of the house, getting coffee and some conversation.”

Henderson said that the most rewarding thing has been running a crew.

“Nothing is more rewarding than getting a crew that acts like a family, and shares your vision. Watching them grow in and outside of the business is truly gratifying,” she added.

The hours for NorthWild Coffee are Monday-Friday from 5 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. For more info, call (509) 936-3610.
