Two were injured in a two-vehicle accident early Wednesday, July 27 at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the area of 501 S. Park Street near the Chewelah McDonald’s restaurant.
According to Chewelah Police Department, a vehicle travelling northbound at a high rate of speed collided from behind with the second vehicle, causing that vehicle to travel another 200 feet before coming to a stop. The causing vehicle continued an additional 400 feet before colliding with, and toppling, a large concrete light base at the Hico gas station, 403 S. Park St.
The driver of the causing vehicle was pulled from the wreckage by a passing motorist. The car burst into flames shortly after.
Chewelah Police responded to the scene with assistance by the Stevens County Sheriff’s Department.
The driver of the other vehicle was removed by a Sheriff’s deputy out of concern that fuel from the car’s ruptured tank could ignite.
Both drivers were transported to Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chewelah with injuries.
There were no passengers in either vehicle. Both vehicles were totalled.
The driver of the causing vehicle was charged with numerous crimes and the case has been forwarded to the Stevens County Prosecutor, according to the Chewelah P.D.
