Smith and Carpenter help lead Cougars to victory…
Northwest Christian came into Tuesday’s match having already swept the Cougars in early season play. Chewelah, however, proved to be too scrappy, the student section proved to be too loud and Bailey Smith dug every ball hit her way.
The Cougars won 25-19, 16-25, 25-21, 25-21 to hand NWC their first NE 2B North Division loss of the season. It wasn’t an easy match by any stretch of the imagination as sets were close the entire way – with the exception of the second set – and the final two sets really went down to the wire.
Smith finished with 31 digs.
Elle Carpenter twisted and turned on the court to provide 26 assists and 17 digs – testing out the new court finish by diving for seemingly every ball. Haven Rainier led the attack with 10 kills while Alyssa Fitzgerald notched eight kills as well.
Jesse Macrae was a solid back row presence notching 25 digs, while senior Karilee Desautel prowled the net with three blocks. As a team the Cougars had 96 digs.
Northwest Christian was dealing with some injuries to key players but Paige Dawson notched 13 kills and 18 digs for the Crusaders.
The win improves Chewelah to 9-2 on the year and 5-2 in league. Northwest Christian took third place at the 2B state tournament last year. The Cougars will play at St. George’s on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
