The road to the NEA League championship is now wide open after Newport upset No. 5-ranked Deer Park on Friday night in dramatic fashion. Meanwhile, Riverside improved to 2-0 on the year with a big win against Freeman and Lakeside trounced Medical Lake.
MY OH MY! NEWPORT TOPPLED DEER PARK
Both teams came into this matchup on opposite sides of the spectrum with 0-2 Newport facing a 2-0 Deer Park juggernaut. The homestanding Grizzlies, however, gutted out a defensive 13-6 victory on Friday night.
Deer Park led 6-3 at halftime, but a touchdown by Newport put them up 10-6 in the third quarter, then Ronan Sherman kicked one of his two field goals in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
Remi Scott scored on a four-yard touchdown run for the Stags in the second quarter but it wasn’t enough as Deer Park fell to 2-1 on the year. This loss gives Colville a chance in this spring COVID-19 season to control their own destiny when it comes to the league title.
BIG THIRD QUARTER LIFTS RIVERSIDE PAST FREEMAN
Silas Ng had three touchdowns for Riverside, all in the second quarter as the Rams won their NEA League matchup against Freeman on Friday night. Freeman fell to 0-3 on the year as their offense could not get going.
Riverside led 27-0 at halftime and the second half was scoreless for both teams.
The Rams were led by Jaden Becker’s 136 rushing yards, and Jackson Beck’s five receptions, two for touchdowns, and 68 yards.
Riverside improved to 2-0 on the year and will face their rival Deer Park next week.
LAKESIDE STREAKS PAST MEDICAL LAKE
Eagles quarterback Kole Hunsaker threw for 246 yards and four touchdowns as the air-minded Lakeside Eagles downed winless Medical Lake 46-0 in NEA League play on Friday. Lakeside led 20-0 after the first quarter and it never really became a game.
Medical Lake fell to 0-3 on the year, while Lakeside remained undefeated at 2-0.
Dawson Tobeck also caught two touchdown passes in the matchup. The Eagles will face Colville this Friday in a battle of Stevens County teams.
