Recently, students in grades 1 through 8 were invited to submit poems and short stories for the Young Writer’s Contest sponsored by Chewelah Woman’s Club in conjunction with the General Federated Women’s Club of Washington State. Students had a criteria to follow as they wrote original poems and short stories to be submitted for judging. What a surprise for the local judges to have over 100 entries with creative efforts from Chewelah area students.
The first place entries in each category and grade level have been sent to the GFWC-Washington State level to be judged along with other entries from across the state. Monetary prizes will be awarded at the state level in April.
Gess Elementary students who placed first or second in their grade levels received “Book Bucks” to be redeemed at the upcoming Book Fair. These awards, along with certificates, were presented to the students at a recent Leap Year Day assembly by Chewelah Woman’s club members Holly Peterson and Bonnie Rail. Students placing at the Middle School level were both from Summit Valley School and will be receiving cash prizes.

Short Story – Grades 1-3; 1st – Kailee Parrott, 2nd – Kaley Anderson, 3rd – Isaiah Ackmann
Poetry – Grades 4-5; 1st – Charlotte Falstad, 2nd – Hailey Crise, 3rd – Lily Kirry
Short Story – Grades 4-5; 1st – Lily Kirry, 2nd – Charlotte Falstad, 3rd – Mathew Higgins
Middle School Poetry; 1st place – Sarah Carlson;
Middle School Short Story; 1st place – Macy Morgan
