Chewelah’s dream of a league wrestling championship was dealt a severe setback last Thursday night at Freeman when the Cougars were dominated by the Scotties by a 39-24 score.
“We didn’t wrestle very well,” said Coach Patrick Mitchell. “We lost some matches we had never planned on losing.”
When all was said and done, the Cougars had won only five bouts on the mat. Adam Collins, Russell Smith, and Josh Hanley pinned their Freeman opponents. Matthew Crise and Kyle Connall both won decisions. The remaining matches were won by the Scotties.
Collins earned Chewelah’s only first round pin as he won the 170-pound bout. Smith pinned his opponent in the second round of the 152-pound match. Hanley earned a third round pin in the 220-pound pairing.
Connall scored a 9-2 decision. Crise’s win was by a narrow 8-7 score.
Chewelah lost two bouts by a single point. Connor Fulbright was beaten 2-1 in the 160-pound bout. Dustin Olson lost the heavyweight match by a 1-0 score.
The Cougars went into this dual meet with an undefeated 3-0 league record. This loss left Freeman as the lone undefeated team in the league. Chewelah will host Medical Lake here on Thursday at 7:00 in what appears to be another tough outing for the Cougars. They finish their league schedule at Newport on Tuesday.
Chewelah got past Riverside on Tuesday when the Cougars defeated the Rams 43-35 in an away meet.
Adam Collins and Josh Hanley both pinned their Ram opponents in the second round. Dustin Olson and Dustin Crowell followed with pins in the third round.
Collins scored two takedowns and two near-falls in the opening round of his 170-pound bout to take a 10-1 lead on the scoreboard. He then got the pin with 11 seconds remaining in the second round.
Hanley scored two takedowns and an escape to take a 5-0 lead after one round of the 220-pound bout. He rolled his opponent onto his back for the pin with 13 seconds left in the second round.
After trailing 5-1 early in his 285-pound match, Olson tied the score with a takedown and near-fall in the second round. He went on to score a reversal in the third round before pinning his Riverside opponent.
Crowell had a 2-0 lead going into the third round. He scored a reversal and then got the pin with 1:18 remaining in the round.
Hunter Daniels fought to a 13-5 major decision in the 195-pound match. His score included five takedowns.
Russell Smith was behind 4-1 going into the third round of his 152-pound bout. He scored a reversal and a near-fall to win by a 5-4 final score.
Riverside did not fill the 113-pound weight division, so George Dreiszus was awarded the win by forfeit.
