Chewelah suffered a setback last Thursday at Colville when three Cougar errors in the bottom of the final inning permitted the winning Indian run to score.
A bad throw to first base, a muffed catch of a fly ball, and a grounder that skipped through the legs of an infielder combined to break the 2-all tie and hand Colville the 3-2 win.
The trio of errors were the only ones made by Chewelah in the game. Up until that time, the Lady Cougars had played perfect defense.
Chewelah scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Jaelynn Skok doubled and was batted in by Brooklyn Rainer’s single.
In the bottom of the opening inning, Colville scored to knot the score at one run apiece.
The Cougars went ahead in the third inning on Skok’s second double of the game. She was bunted to third base by Jamie Eide and batted in by Krislyn Koler when two Colville outfielders collided. The run gave Chewelah a 2-1 lead through four innings.
“We should have scored more runs in the third inning,” said Coach Tom Skok. “We had only one out and runners on base, but we just didn’t get the hits we needed.”
Colville brought home a run in the fifth inning to again tie the score, this time at 2-2. Then, after a scoreless sixth inning, the three fatal Cougar errors allowed the winning Indian run to score in the final at-bat of the game.
“After the first error, the girls got frustrated,” Skok said, “leading to the other two errors.”
The league loss ended a six- game winning streak for Chewelah.
The Lady Cougars are still in solid third place with an 8-3 record.
Going into this week’s softball action, the Cougars had three games remaining on their league schedule. They had a return game here with Colville (10-1) on Tuesday. They travel to Riverside (2-9) for a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m., to end the regular season. Then, post-season play begins, with Chewelah probably hosting Freeman (4-7) in the opening loser-out round of the District 7 1A Softball Tournament.
