Many community events reliant on volunteers to operate…
Many community events in the NE Washington area need volunteers to continue operation. With small budgets and lots of things to do, volunteers are the gears that keep everything going. A growing problem, however, has been finding these volunteers.
“Some years it’s a struggle,” Theresa Carr, one of the organizers for the Valley Fair, said. “Other years we have plenty. It’s feast or famine. This year was rough, we were short and we weren’t able to hold certain events within the fair.”
The Valley Fair even used handheld electronic prizes to bring out more volunteers for the fair.
Bonni Haskell, one of the organizers for Chataqua, said that finding volunteers for the Chewelah event can prove to be difficult as well.
The same is echoed by Sharon Ludwig, who is involved in both Chataqua and PACA and helps organize work parties every Saturday in the Chewelah Center for the Performing Arts.
