Chewelah showed marked improvement in their five set 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 10-15 loss to NEA League foe Newport Thursday night on the Grizzlies home court. The Cougars had previously been swept by Newport in their season opener weeks ago.
Jaelynn Skok was rock solid on the back line collecting 31 digs. Newport won the first two sets 25-16, 25-23 but Chewelah turned things around to win set three and four by identical scores of 25-23. Krislyn Koler and Bailey Smith each led the team with nine kills and Elle Carpenter notched 18 assists for the Cougars in an impressive performance but Newport came away with the 15-10 fifth set victory.
The loss, while a loss, shows the Cougars are much improved from the start of the season. It also kicks off the second half of the season. They won four games last year and are currently at three wins with games against two teams – Riverside and Medical Lake – they have already beat on the schedule.
Chewelah (3-6, 2-6) will play at Freeman on Tuesday.
