Woodland Theatre Presents “The Importance of Being Earnest” performed as a Readers Theatre
John Worthing, a carefree young gentleman, is the inventor of a fictitious brother, “Earnest,” whose wicked ways afford John an excuse to leave his country home from time to time and journey to London, where he stays with his close friend and confidant, Algernon Moncrieff. Algernon has a cousin, Gwendolen Fairfax, with whom John is deeply in love. During his London sojourns, John, under the name Earnest, has won Gwendolen’s love, for she strongly desires to marry someone with the confidence-inspiring name of Earnest. But when he asks for Gwendolen’s hand from the formidable Lady Bracknell, John finds he must reveal he is a foundling who was left in a handbag at Victoria Station. This is very disturbing to Lady Bracknell, who insists that he produce at least one parent before she consents to the marriage. Returning to the country home where he lives with his ward Cecily Cardew and her governess Miss Prism, John finds that Algernon has also arrived under the identity of the nonexistent brother Earnest. Algernon falls madly in love with the beautiful Cecily, who has long been enamored of the mysterious, fascinating brother Earnest. With the arrival of Lady Bracknell and Gwendolen things start to go awry – that’s when we all learn the importance of being Earnest!

Free virtual community talk: the history of Evangelicals in American politics

Libraries of Stevens County and Humanities Washington invite the community to an engaging conversation with Matthew Sutton, a member of the 2019-2021 Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau, on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 6:30 PM via Zoom.

About This Program
Join Humanities Washington speaker Matthew Sutton in this live Zoom event hosted by the Libraries of Stevens County. Explore the history and meaning behind a uniquely American movement: Evangelical Christianity. Evangelicals are the strongest religious voting block in America, despite being a relatively new coalition. How did they come to hold such power? In this balanced and respectful talk, WSU professor Matthew Sutton traces the history of the religious right in America, from its early roots to its rise to power under Ronald Reagan and into the current era. Feeling concerned about the rise in secularism, evangelicals have taken to the pulpit and the airwaves to explain how Biblical end-times prophecies make sense of a troubled modern world.

About Matthew Sutton
Matthew Sutton is the Berry Family Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and chair of the Department of History at Washington State University. He received his PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara. His most recent book is Double Crossed: The Missionaries Who Spied for the United States During the Second World War. Sutton has been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and MSNBC’s The Last Word, among many other news shows. Sutton lives in Pullman.
