Three Chewelah Cougars wrestled in the state tournament last weekend, and three of them came home with medals.
Adam Collins, Russell Smith, and Dustin Olson each returned from Mat Classic XXV in the Tacoma Dome with hardware.
Collins battled all the way to the 170-pound championship finals before losing a close 4-2 match.
Smith won four of his five matches in the 152-pound bracket and placed third overall.
Dustin Olson won three of his five matches in the heavyweight bracket and placed seventh.
Collins Places Second
Collins pinned his first two opponents. He started by pinning Noah Son from Cascade Christian in the second round. Next, he pinned Anthony Louthan from Montesano midway through the first round. His third win was a 7-5 decision over Vashon Island’s Shane Armstrong.
The three victories on the mat vaulted Collins into the 170-pound championship finals.
Unfortunately for Collins, a pair of takedowns beats a pair of escapes, so he lost a narrow 4-2 decision to Alex Myrick from Royal City. Thus, he placed second in his 16-man bracket.
Smith Places Third
Call it sweet revenge. Russell Smith was defeated by Quincy’s Carter Bushman in the finals of the bi-district tournament at Chelan. The two met again in the Tacoma Dome last Saturday in the battle for third and fourth places in the state tournament. This time, it was Smith who won the match in overtime, 10-8, and took home the third place medal.
When the score ended in an 8-8 tie at the end of regulation time, Smith and Bushman faced each other in the center circle of the mat for a sudden death overtime period. The referee blew his whistle, Smith scored a takedown, and the Cougar brought home the third place medal.
The Chewelah 152-pounder won four of his five bouts in this year’s state tournament. He earned two decisions, won a major decision, and had a pin. His lone loss was in the semifinals. Following that loss, Smith won his next two bouts to place third.
Olson Finishes Seventh
Olson came back from a first match loss on Friday to finish the day with consecutive wins. He won a 2-0 decision and followed that up with a 7-3 decision.
Then, Olson was paired with his bi-district nemesis, Louis Garcia from Chelan, to whom he lost the previous week. And, Garcia won again. That sent Olson into the battle for seventh place, which he won by pinning Eatonville’s Chase Demoor early in the third round.
Being a junior, Olson has one more year to improve his placing on the awards stand.
Crise Gets a State Win
Cougar freshman 113-pounder Matthew Crise did not bring home a state medal, but he did win a bout in his first trip to the Tacoma Dome. In his second outing onto the mat, Crise scored a pin 57 seconds into the third round. He lost two matches on Friday and was eliminated.
Dustin Crowell found himself in an extremely tough 138-pound weight bracket. He lost both of his two bouts and was eliminated.
Likewise, Josh Hanley left the tournament after only two bouts. He lost his final 195-pound match in overtime.
Like Olson, Hanley and Crise will return to the team again next winter.
