The Chewelah Lady Cougars kept pace with the league leaders through the past week with three consecutive wins over conference contenders.
Tylee Frizzell went 2-for-3 at the plate and batted in three runs and Jaelynn Skok threw a one-hit shutout on Tuesday as the Lady Cougars made short work of the visiting Newport Grizzlies.
Chewelah used nine hits and took advantage of five Newport errors to steamroll the Grizzlies 15-0 in a five-inning league encounter.
Jaelynn Skok went 3-for-3 and batted in two runs as Chewelah won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader 7-3 over Deer Park.
Jamie Eide went 2-for-3 with a two-run single in the third inning to trigger a 5-1 win in the second game to complete the two-game Cougar sweep over the visiting Stags.
The three league wins raised Chewelah’s league record to five wins and two losses. The Cougars still remain one game behind Colville and Lakeside, both with only one loss.
The Lady Cougars take a three-game road trip this week. They went to Newport (0-8) on Tuesday. They then travel to Freeman (4-3) on Friday for a doubleheader.
Chewelah steamrolled winless Newport last week, ousting the Grizzlies 15-0 in five innings. The Cougars scored six runs in the second inning and nine more in the fourth to win on the 10-run rule, with every player in the lineup swatting a hit.
The return of three veteran players for Saturday’s doubleheader against Deer Park bolstered Coach Tom Skok’s roster for a key encounter against the Stags, resulting in twin wins for the Lady Cougars.
After two scoreless innings, Chewelah got on the scoreboard first with a two-run third inning. Bailey Smith opened the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single into center-field. Bunt singles by Skok and Haley Kuk brought home one run. Krislyn Koler’s bunt down the first baseline scored another for a 2-0 Cougar lead.
With Skok and Kuk on base again in the fifth inning, Eide’s sacrifice bunt allowed one Chewelah run to score from third base. Kuk then came home on a passed ball to break a two-all tie and give the Cougars a 4-2 lead.
Kennedy Robison’s double into left-field ignited a three-run sixth inning for Chewelah. A pair of Stag errors and a single off the bat of Skok brought home Robison, Frizzell and Bailey Smith for the 7-3 league win.
“We choked up on our bats so we could do a better job against Deer Park pitching,” said Coach Skok, “and we got some breaks on errors. Deer Park did not make the defensive plays against us that Lakeside did the week before.”
Eide’s bases loaded single in the third inning scored Frizzell and Smith to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
Singles by Eide and Robison, along with a double by Koler, added two more runs to Chewelah’s score.
Frizzell’s double up the middle in the sixth inning gave Skok an RBI opportunity, and her single did the job, nailing down a 5-1 Cougar win.
The Lady Cougars went to Newport on Tuesday. They travel to Freeman on Friday for a late afternoon doubleheader.
