The TASTY (Temporary Added Sustenance to Youth) Summer Food Program in Chewelah is now accepting applications from families with children who may need help ensuring their kids receive adequate nutrition in the summer months. Families who are eligible for the summer food program generally have school aged children that qualify for free and reduced lunches in the Chewelah and Valley School Districts during the school year.
The TASTY Program is coordinated through the Chewelah Faith Resources Group, an ecumenical ministry, which partners churches with service agencies to address important community needs. The TASTY Program provides boxes of food items for breakfast and lunch that are high in nutrition and low in sodium and sugar. The program also partners with the Chewelah Farmers Market to provide vouchers for families so they can access fresh fruits and vegetables of their liking.
Families must apply to be part of the program and agree to pick up the summer food boxes at set dates and times at a location in Chewelah. Families must have turned in an application and be approved in advance in order to receive summer food boxes. Food will be available for pick-up every two weeks starting after Chataqua. Families will be notified of dates and times for pick-up. Applications are available at the Chewelah Food Bank, the United Church of Christ Church, and St. Mary of the Rosary Church. The application deadline is June 30.
Last year, the TASTY Program provided supplemental food for 30 children (16 families) and we expect the total to at least double this year. The Chewelah Faith Resources Group relies on money from grants and donations to support this program. Donations can be delivered or mailed to St. Mary of the Rosary Church. Make checks out to St. Mary’s and specify that funds are for “TASTY” in the memo field.
