David Stroyan, RPh, of Chewelah and the Pharmacy Manager at the Browne’s Addition Rosauers, has been recognized as Rosauers Employee of the Month for the month of May. Store Manager Ken Bester stated, “We are very proud of Dave and grateful for him being on staff, not only does he provide exceptional customer service and valuable knowledge to our pharmacy on a daily basis, he has been credited with saving a customer’s life, literally in front of my very eyes.”
As Dave was waiting on a customer, he witnessed another customer collapse. He immediately assessed that the customer had stopped breathing and did not have a pulse. Within approximately 20 seconds, Dave asked his coworkers to call 911 and he began CPR. He continued chest compressions for the next five minutes. David explained, “I knew paramedics would be arriving soon and my background and instinct told me his brain needed oxygen, and I just prayed I could supply that with chest compressions.”
Paramedics did arrive and instructed Dave to keep up with the chest compressions as they set up equipment. Their monitors indicated no pulse and it was not until medical intervention did the 33-year-old male regain a heartbeat. It was determined the young man was without a pulse for over seven minutes by looking at surveillance video.
After two days of intubation and over one week in intensive care, the customer was able to personally thank Dave for saving his life and the hospital staff stressed how miraculous it was that he was able to make a full recovery. His intensive care nurse stated, “you are a lucky man, it is very rare someone survives an ordeal such as this and even rarer they do not have brain damage.”
Mr. Stroyan was also informed that he will be the recipient of a “Citizen Life Saving Award” by the Spokane Fire Department.
