Couch leads Lady Rangers with 27 points…
The Selkirk girls faced their second straight win or go home matchup, this time in the first round of the state 1B championships, and once again came out on top, defeating the higher seeded Taholah Chitwhins 62-49 to advance.
The 15th-seeded Rangers raced out to a quick first quarter lead and built on that through the first half as their defense clamped down on the Chitwhins to take a 30-18 lead at the half. The Ranger defense held Taholah to under 29% shooting during that time, including just 1-8 on three point attempts.
Taholah came back strong as the second half got underway. The Chitwhin offense found some life, shooting nearly 50% for the half, to push the Rangers. Selkirk still had life in them, though, and managed to do just enough to keep Taholah at bay throughout the half and extending their overall lead to finish off the Chitwhins by 13.
Jenna Couch had a game high 27 points to go along with 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 8 steals for Selkirk. Bree Dawson added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals, and Nicol Lyons pitched in another 12 points and 6 rebounds in the win.
Denise Curleybear put up 17 points for the Chitwhins and teammate Nettie Mail added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The win sends the Rangers on to another loser-out matchup, this time with the top-seed Colton Wildcats Feb. 28 at 10:30 a.m.
