Smokey will be at the Chewelah City Park on August 9…
Please join the employees of the Colville National Forest in celebrating Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday on Friday, August 9 at two locations in Stevens County. Bring your camera to Colville or Chewelah and get your picture taken with Smokey, weather permitting.
Smokey will be available for photos 10-10:30 a.m. at the headquarters in Colville and from noon-12:30 p.m. at the Chewelah Farmers Market located at the corner of North Park Street (U.S. 395) and East Lincoln Avenue.
For the past 75 years, Smokey Bear has been teaching generations of children how to prevent wildfires. As one of the most recognizable fictional characters, Smokey Bear has become the symbol of wildfire prevention and an American icon. Created in 1944, the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest running public service advertising campaign in United States history. With his slogans like “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,” children are learning about their roles and responsibilities in wildfire prevention.
