November 12 – 16, 2012 is International Education Week (IEW). A joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education, International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of global education and student exchange worldwide. It is also a wonderful occasion for me to share what hosting an international exchange student has added to our family’s life.
We are hosting a student this year through EF Foundation for Foreign Study. As new participants in international exchange, it has been our joy to provide an important avenue to enhance our community’s global understanding and knowledge. Hosting is helping to prepare our own children to embrace the diversity of today’s interconnected world. Our student has been a wonderful addition to our family and we are already planning to host again.
I want to acknowledge and offer my warmest thanks to local EF Foundation Regional Coordinators, Pat and Mara Schneider who invited us to become a host family. I also want to thank the staff and administrators at Jenkins High School in Chewelah who have helped support our exchange student and enhance international understanding. Finally, I also thank other area schools that have opened their doors to EF Foundation students in recent years.
There are students from more than 30 countries looking to spend time in the United States in 2013. Why not welcome them to our beautiful region? To those interested in learning more about becoming a host family, I whole-heartedly encourage you to visit www.effoundation.org. It might just be the best thing you can do in 2013!
