The Chewelah Cougars will open their football season this coming fall with four home games, announced athletic director Pat Gaffney.
The Cougars will host Bridgeport in a non-league encounter on Friday, September 2, to begin their schedule.
“Then we immediately go into league play with home games against Riverside, Newport, and Freeman on the next three Friday nights,” said Gaffney.
After the Freeman game, renovation will commence on the Snyder Field complex with the construction of a new all-weather track and football field. District constituents approved a $1,150,000 last February for the needed upgrade.
“This will actually be a much better football schedule for us than we have had the past couple of years,” said Gaffney. “In 2014 and 2015, we started the league season with Lakeside, Deer Park, and Colville, three of the toughest teams in the league. Beginning with Riverside and Newport will give us a better opportunity to win a game or two early in the season.”
The remaining five games on the schedule will all be played on the fields of opponents. They will be at Deer Park, Lakeside, Medical Lake, Colville, and conclude at a Caribou Trail school for the annual crossover game.
The Cougars still have an open date in their schedule for October 14, that Gaffney is still trying to fill.
