The Lady Cougars are still trying to achieve some consistency in their play against upper division opponents in Northeast A League matches.
“The girls are coming around,” said Coach Tara Sheppard Anderson. “They’re playing a lot better than at the beginning of the season. More importantly, they’re really playing with heart. Right now, it’s a matter of putting it all together. The girls have the skills. Now, they have to turn those skills into wins.
“We have six seniors who want to have a rewarding season. They want to win.”
The Cougars had two good games at Riverside last Tuesday. They won one game 25-23 and lost one by a narrow 25-22 score. The other two, however, were dominated by the host Rams, 25-16 and 25-12.
The match completed the first round of league volleyball play, with the Lady Cougars sitting in fifth place in the standings with a 2-4 record.
Savanah McMillin hammered seven spikes for kills against the Rams to lead Chewelah at the net. Brittney Wuesthoff set 16 assists to Cougar hitters, and Atasha Edwards served the Chewelah’s lone ace.
Ryann Richmond led the Cougar defense with six digs.
The Cougars went on the road for the second time on Thursday, traveling to Lakeside to begin the second round of league play. The Eagles, who are undefeated in league play with an 8-0 record, handed Chewelah another loss with a three-game sweep. The scores of the three games were: 25-11, 25-17, and 25-15.
Rebecca Kenney slammed five spikes for kills at the net to top Cougar hitters, and Wuesthoff set 14 assists.
Wuesthoff served Chewelah’s only ace serve, and Kaitlyn Krouse blocked two Eagle spikes. Katelin Garner finished the match with seven digs.
“Katelin is our libero, and she is beginning to dominate the back court for us,” said Coach Anderson. “Kaitlyn Krouse is starting to work the net a lot more competitively and using her height. We are also going to bring Jayden Rainer up for some extra height this week.”
The Lady Cougars are at home this Thursday against Kettle Falls. They travel to Medical Lake on Tuesday. These are two teams Chewelah beat in the first round of league play, and the Cougars are determined to win both matches again this time around. Match time is 6:30.
