STIX AND SPOKES YOUR ONE-STOP SHOP BEFORE THE HILL: Chewelah store offers skis, snowboards, service and much more!
Chewelah is “A Place for all Seasons,” and Wes Porter has a store for all seasons. The owner of Stix and Spokes has restocked his store in preparation for the winter season. Porter has been servicing winter equipment for years, but this season is different as he is carrying the most inventory he’s ever had.
After “switching over” from a lot of the biking inventory he had during the summer, Porter’s shop will be offering repair and tuning services, rentals for skis and snowboards, along with sales of performance and economy skis and snowboards. It’s a one-stop shop for the winter sports enthusiast and also comes with the experience and knowledge that Porter provides himself.
“It’s important when getting equipment to get the right size and the right type,” Porter said. “I’ve heard some horror stories of things going wrong because a shop just wanted to get whatever they had off the shelf – both bikes and skis.”
Stix and Spokes will be stocked with Head skis and snowboards, a brand that Porter says is still sticking to their roots and being manufactured in Austria to the highest of standards.
“They’re one of the world’s leading manufacturers in winter sports equipment, and they haven’t shipped off to China,” Porter said.
He has price-point equipment for those on a budget and then higher end equipment for people looking to really rip things up on 49 Degrees North. He also has skis designed for groomed runs and then in deeper snow, so they better fit the needs of the consumer.
“There are a lot of different options and I can help you narrow things down and find the right product,” Porter said.
Along with this, servicing snowboards and skis is important. He also sharpens and fixes edges on snowboards and skis. This means your equipment will move better on the snow, and the worked-on edges will allow for better control. Over time, wax will dry and scrape off, while edges will get dinged and provide less consistent surface contact with the ground. Porter said it’s always recommended for a ski tech to check bindings every year as well. Properly maintaining your equipment is important to get the most out of your skiing or snowboarding experience.
“It’s good to get a nice tune at the beginning of the season and wax skis as needed,” Porter said.
You can usually drop your skis or snowboard off at Stix and Spokes and Wes will work hard for a quick turnaround. Towards the end of the season, Porter offers a thick layer of “storage wax” which will protect the skis or snowboards during the offseason.
A safety check is free and services also include from base products, hot wax, basic tune, deluxe tune and an extreme base repair. Along with that, Stix and Spokes will also have Head helmets, ski poles and clothing like gloves, hats and socks, as well as bindings. New this year is Blenders eyewear, which are versatile as they come with two lenses and a magnetic Quick Change system.
Wes also has a big selection of Christmas gifts, and some great ideas. Porter has snow skates, longboards, one longboard with a Bluetooth speaker, custom chameleon color changing paint BMX frame and a Sunday 24-inch BMX all-chrome frame. He is also selling the rest of his biking stock at a greatly reduced price.
If you just want to try out winter sports, Porter is offering a full-day rental package for $38, while also offering individual pieces of equipment for less than that. You can rent boots from Porter as well in several different sizes.
He has adjusted his hours for the winter to 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more info, go to Stixandspokes.com or call 509-690-2772.
