Facing two of the top 10 class-1A teams in the state at the front of the league schedule was difficult for the young Chewelah wrestling team. The Cougars opened their season at Freeman, where they won only two bouts on the mat in losing to the ninth-ranked Scotties by a 54-27 score. Thenon Thursday night, they hosted second-ranked Colville, posting two wins on the mat in a 54-18 loss to the Indians.
Gage Smith and Kaden Mackowiak were Chewelah’s only winners at Freeman. Smith battled to a 4-1 decision in the 138-pound bout. Mackowiak pinned his opponent 35 seconds into the first round. The other 18 Cougar team points came from forfeits issued to Conner Krouse, Dayton Smith, and Wade Baker.
Krouse and Dayton Smith were Chewelah’s lone winners against Colville.
Krouse was only on the mat for 41 seconds in the 220-pound pairing.
During that short time, he scored a pair of takedowns—one on an ankle pick and the other on a single-leg—before administering the coup de gras with a crunch cradle.
Smith held a 4-2 lead after one round.
Starting in the neutral position in the second found, the Cougar 113-pounder scored a quick takedown and worked it into a pin with a head-and- arm combination. The referee slapped the mat with 31 seconds gone in the round.
Chewelah also scored six team points on a forfeit given to Leandra Haden.
The Cougars go into this week’s league match at Medical Lake with a 0-2 league record. The Cardinals are 0-1 after losing their first league outing to Deer Park.
At last weekend’s Othello Invitational Tournament, four Cougars brought home medals. Krouse won the 220- pound bracket championship with four consecutive pins, all in the first round, Mackowiak finished third in the 138-pound bracket, winning four of his five bouts. He won three decisions and notched one pin.
Gage Smith and Wade Baker both placed fifth.
