In response to last week’s letter about keeping cats indoors: People who love their cats and allow them to go outside are not irresponsible pet owners. That is a broad generalization. There is a huge difference between a friend or neighbor’s beloved family pet wandering across a property line and the truly irresponsible pet owners who have abused or neglected their pets, dumped them off or refused to get them spayed/neutered .
A search of the internet brings up as many articles/sources supporting the need for cats to be allowed outside as not. With enough statistics, you can prove anything!
However, common courtesy tells me if a cat wanders onto my property and I know who the owner is, I take it to the owner to let them know. The point of addressing this issue at the City Council meeting was to inform the community that, bottom line, it is unlawful to trap, take or kill someone else’s pet. There is no justification for that kind of cruel treatment.
The choice to trap or kill the animal reflects badly on the character of the perpetrator, not the owner!
