The inaugural flying of Flags Over Chewelah will feature special guest Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers on July 4 in Chewelah, according to project organizers Del Barber Jr. and Kelley Robertson.
The event will kick off at 8 a.m. in the M&L Auto Parts/NAPA parking lot with McMorris Rodgers speaking shortly after that. Coffee and donuts will be available to attendees.
“This event is the culmination of lots of hard work and preparation by many people to honor our country and those that have sacrificed for our freedom,” Barber said about the project.
Barber indicated that nearly 90 flags will be displayed on Main Ave. that day, easily surpassing the original goal of 50 flags.
Each flag has been sponsored by local individuals and families and custom embroidered with a family name or special individual.
After the inaugural event, the flags will be flown from early morning to late afternoon on ten holidays every year, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day.
“Kelley and I invite the community to come down, see the flags and visit with Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers,” Barber said.
“I also want to thank the businesses that have contributed to the success of this project, including Lane Mt. Silica, Chewelah Auto Parts, Haney Lumber, Dawson Trucking, Fogle Pump and Supply, Chewelah Welding and the City of Chewelah,” he added.
Although Flags Over Chewelah is kicking off on July 4 with 90 flags, Barber emphasized that flag sponsorships will still be available after that date.
He estimates that 120 flag holders can be placed on Main Ave. between Park St. and 5th St. E. Then, Barber hopes to start installing flag holders along Park St./Hwy 395.
Each flag sponsorship costs $85 and applications can be picked up at The Independent, 401 S. Park St. Suite A, or contact Barber directly. Barber can be contacted via the “Flags Over Chewelah” Facebook page or by calling 509-936-1685.
