Mary, a longtime resident of Valley WA, passed away Saturday morning, June 10 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chewelah WA. Mary Ellen was born to Archie and Virgie Tyre in Deland, Florida. She had four brothers and two sisters. Her twin sister, Maudie Carr, of Valley, is her only surviving sibling.
In 1963, Mary married Magnes “Butch” Metlow, the same year he joined the US Navy. During their time in the military, Butch and Mary lived in many places, including Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, Newfoundland and Hawaii. They had three children.
Mary liked fishing, hunting, huckleberry and mushroom picking. She enjoyed sight-seeing, riding around the back roads looking for birds, deer and elk. She enjoyed her grandkids and great grandkids. She had a passion for pink flamingos and collected many over the years.
Mary Ellen Metlow is survived by her husband Magnes “Butch” Metlow, son Archie “Frank” and wife Cindy Metlow; daughter Dawn and husband Rob Thompson; grandchildren Kayla May, Wyatt Johns, Brandy and husband James Ellsworth, Mehgan Metlow, Cody and wife Aubrey Metlow, Emily Metlow and Nathan Thompson. She has three great grandchildren and one newly arrived.
The family would like to thank the Spokane Tribe of Indians for their kindness and generosity. We would also like to thank Jamie Lavato and the Matzdorf family for being so supportive during our difficult time. We appreciate the St. Joseph’s Hospital staff for their care and compassion.
A public visitation will be held at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Chewelah on Thursday June 15, 2017 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
A Memorial Service is being held on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Valley Grange Hall. A potluck luncheon will follow the service.
