Cougars split with Riverside as well…
The Chewelah tennis teams split with Freeman last Friday afternoon. The Cougar boys defeated the shorthanded Scotties 4-1, while the girls team was defeated by the same 4-1 score.
In number one doubles play, Sylus Snelling and Trevor Arnold came from behind in the second set to win their match, 6-3 and 6-4.
Keith Justice was defeated in the number one singles match, 6-2 and 6-2. Although he played well, his opponent made less mistakes, leading to the loss. Earl Howard avenged the loss by goose-egging his Freeman opponent, 6-0 and 6-0, in the number two singles pairing. The Chewelah boys won both the number two and number three doubles matches by forfeit to claim the 4-1 victory.
With the win, they evened their league record at 2-2.
The number two doubles partnership of Kaylynn Palmer and Kristine Schatz were the lone winners for the Chewelah girls. They defeated their Freeman opponents in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4.
The number one singles match was lengthy, with Elizabeth Grubb being edged 6-4 and 7-5 in a close encounter on the court.
The Chewelah number one doubles team of Kindra Hansen and Carmen Hixson did not have a good outing against Freeman’s Gady sisters, losing 6-0 and 6-2. Likewise, the Cougar number three doubles team of Amber Norman and Jordyn Davidson were defeated, 6-1 and 6-2.
In the number two singles match, Katie Kiefer lost, 6-2 and 6-1. After absorbing the league loss, the Cougars girls are 3-2.
The Chewelah boys dropped an NEA League match with Riverside, while the Chewelah girls came away with a 4-1 victory on Tuesday evening (April 11).
The girls won 4-1 as the top two singles players Elizabeth Grubb and Katie Kiefer won their matchups while the top two Chewelah doubles teams also won.
Grubb defeated Jessica Foster 6-2, 6-0, while Kiefer downed Adrianna Azovedo 6-2, 6-4. In doubles action, No. 1 Chewelah team Carmen Hixson and Kindra Hansen defeated Riverside’s Shanowa Wickham and Ally Dorden 6-0, 6-1. In No. 2 doubles, the Cougars’ Kaylynn Palmer and Kirstine Schatz defeated Sofia Siles-Fernandez and Kai Holquist 6-0, 6-1.
The boys lost 4-1 to the Rams, as the Chewelah No. 3 doubles team of Axel Fontana and Juston Hyden were the only winners of the day, downing Riverside’s Jacob Henry and Luke Good 6-1, 7-6 (3).
