Frizzell goes yard in NEA League victory…
The Cougars showed what happens when mother nature actually lets them play a game. On Monday, Chewelah defeated Colville 4-2 in NEA League play at the Barbour Complex April 17. Tylee Frizzell, who has had more than a few clutch hits for the Cougars this year, hit a two-run homer to win it in the 8th inning. Cougars now 6-2 overall, 4-2 in league play. More info on this game will be in next week’s newspaper.
STAGS EEK BY COUGARS
Last Tuesday (April 11), four Chewelah errors in the fourth inning allowed five Deer Park unearned runs to score as the Lady Cougars lost to the Lady Stags by an 8-5 score.
Of the eight runs scored by Deer Park, only two were earned. The rest resulted from Cougar defensive blunders, which ended up costing them the game.
The loss to the unbeaten Stags dropped Chewelah into fifth place in the league standings with a 2-2 record. Later in the week, the Cougars shutout Newport 12-0 to raise their record to 3-2.
The Cougars held a 3-1 lead going into the fatal fourth inning. Jaelynn Skok opened the first inning with a double and was moved over to third base on Krislyn Koler’s single. Skok came home on a pitch that got past the Deer Park catcher to score Chewelah’s first run. Maddy Koler singled later in the inning, bringing home her cousin and Jamie Eide for an early 3-0 Cougar lead. Deer Park responded with a run in the third inning and five more in the fourth at-bat to take over the lead, 5-3.
Maddy Koler singled and was batted in by Kennedy Robison in the fifth inning to narrow the Stag lead to 6-4. Deer Park brought home another runner in the sixth inning to again make it a three-run game, 7-4.
Both teams scored one more run in the seventh inning. Krislyn Koler got on base via an error and was batted in by Jamie Eide, but three consecutive ground outs ended the game for the Cougars.
The Koler cousins swatted five of Chewelah’s six hits. Maddy went 3-for- 4, and Krislyn batted 2-for-4.
CHEWELAH SINKS NEWPORT 12-0
Jaelynn Skok and Larissa Sweat combined to throw a one-hit shutout against Newport last Friday (April 14) as the Lady Cougars shut out the Grizzlies 12-0 for their third league victory of the season.
With the win, Chewelah improved to 3-2 in conference play with nine games remaining on the spring schedule.
The Cougars scored seven runs in the opening inning and five more in their second at-bat to grab an early 12-0 lead.
In the middle of the fifth inning, the game ended on the 10-run rule when Newport failed to score.
Chewelah brought home seven runs off only three hits in their first trip at the plate. Maddie Koler hit a two-run double, along with singles by Kennedy Robison and Krislyn Koler. The rest of the runs were gifts resulting from four walks issued by Newport and two hit batters. The Cougars sent 13 batters to the plate and ended the inning with the bases loaded.
In the second inning, the Cougars added five more runs on four hits. Haley Kuk got to bat twice, hammering a pair of singles. Also swatting hits were Tylee Frizzell and Skok. The Koler cousins and Robison walked and were batted in to lift Chewelah to a 12-0 lead after only two innings.
The Cougars had baserunners in the third and fourth innings, but none of them scored. Zandy Nelson and Jessica Eide had hits, but were left on base.
Altogether, Chewelah pounded nine hits. Newport’s lone single came in the fourth inning.
Skok threw the first two no-hit innings for the Cougars, striking out five of the six batters she faced to earn the win. Larissa Sweat pitched the last three innings, to earn the save, allowing no runs to preserve the shutout win.
