Sheriff’s deputies apparently shot and killed a man residing at 3675 Deer Creek Road on Saturday evening, Oct. 20, while responding to a call from a reportedly suicidal man at about 11 p.m.
Sheriff Kendle Allen withheld the man’s name pending a report from the Stevens County Coroner’s office following an autopsy scheduled for this week.
Although many details of the incident were being withheld, Sheriff Allen stated that, “a shot was fired and a male subject was struck. Stevens County District 4 fire and Chewelah Ambulance responded but the male was later pronounced dead at the scene.”
The incident is being handled as an officer involved shooting and the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team.
According to Sheriff Allen, the deputies were not injured and a firearm was recovered at the scene.
County prosecutor Tim Rasmussen expects a briefing later this week and will make a decision as to proceedings following a report from the regional response team.
