Here are Letters for the Editor from the Sept. 15, 2016 edition of the Chewelah Independent.
Disappointed in Rasmussen
We have laws in our state, that have to be upheld. When our elected prosecutor ra nagainst Jerry Wettle for Stevens County Prosecutor, he ran on the promise that his door would always be open and that he would prosecute all crimes.
At that time I talked to Tim Rasmussen and told him I had been blackballed from having any rights in this community as Mr. Wetle so advised me in 1991. Since then I have had no police protection but I have been falsely charged with several felonies without probable cause and both the police and Mr. Rasmussen knew I did not commit those crimes. Had I accepted a public pretender, I would have gone to jail on our Sheriff’s deputies false statements.
However, when I represented myself, all charges were dropped. It pays to get an education in law.
I delivered campaign material for Mr. Rasmussen and told people we would get some justice rather than selective prosecution. If I have any breath in me when Mr. Rasmussen runs for reelection, you can bet I will remind him and others how he broke his campaign promises.
In my opinion, we had a cesspool type of government when Jerry Wetle was Prosecutor. After Mr. Rasmussen won his first reelection I talked to him about a crime committed against me and complained that the Sheriffs’ office would not do their duty.
Mr. Rasmussen told me he heard I was not credible.
That is only gossip with no evidence to support that fact. It was slander. Since Mr. Rasmussen had just been on television, I had to remind him that the very “same” people who started false rumors about me were the same two people who were responsible for that embarrassing TV news article about him.
Now he is just part of that Good Old Boys Club he promised he would never join.
The Scourge of Zika
Imagine the anticipation of a new baby’s arrival, the possibilities…only to learn your child has been infected by Zika.Microcephaly is diagnosed, meaning the head and brain are too small and the child won’t develop normally, and could require constant care. The cost for that care is estimated to be extremely high over a lifetime, and there’s no telling how many children will be affected. The joy of motherhood comes crashing down.
Imagine the fear of getting pregnant in an area where the disease runs rampant, and the resources for planned pregnancies are severely limited.
The epidemic in Brazil has travelled north, through Central America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and into the US. While it’s primarily spread by mosquitos, it is also sexually transmitted.
The CDC, one of the world’s premier public health research labs, has been studying this epidemic intensely, but is crippled by lack of funding. Our Republican leaders in Congress left Washington for two months, refusing to fund the research that is so desperately needed.
Who should be held accountable for preventing an epidemic from exploding into a pandemic?
CMR is the fourth ranking member in House leadership, but she has refused to lead. Her special needs child receives the best services and treatment available, but what about women without access to basic medical care? It’s time to send Cathy back home, and choose someone who cares about people, their health, their jobs and their children’s future. Elect Joe Pakootas to represent our district; he will provide true leadership.
Endorsement for Pat Monasmith
I am writing to support Pat Monasmith for re-election as Superior Court Judge. For the past six years, my deputies and I have practiced in front of him in Superior Court matters, from murder trials to truancy. He works hard to fulfill the enormous demands of time the Superior Court judgeship in these three county requires. He is always available to listen to the state and the defense as we move cases forward in the criminal justice system.
I have watched him struggle with the hard decisions of the bench and I have seen him make discretionary calls with thought and consideration. I have seen him follow the law at sentencing even when he did not agree with it.
He listens to victims and defendants and always keeps in mind his duty toward the public and to public safety. I think he should be re-elected.
Hillary has a history of mistakes
I am still frustrated. After watching both the Republican and Democratic Conventions I have some comments. This country was founded on a revolt against the British elite and their rules. Now we have a Washington elite that do not follow the desires of the citizens. We have no perfect choice this election year.
Hillary has a history of many mistakes and problems. My biggest problem is with the Clinton Foundation. How can it acquire two billion dollars, most while Hillary was Secretary of State. It seems to be to be a political mafia and corruption set up and I don’t like that. If Hillary is elected president, what and who will donate to get political decisions in their favor and where will it end?
After all is said and done, the one big benefit of Trump is that he has no political system, Wall Street bankers, lobby groups or anyone behind closed doors running him. Maybe an outsider can make a difference. With Hillary it will be more accelerated policies of the Obama administration. I think Trump has strong patriotic feelings for our country and doesn’t like the direction it’s going. I’m willing to take the change and maybe he’ll be a modern Reagan. We will soon see.

Please vote your beliefs for the direction of our country.
