Here are Letters to the Editor for Aug. 11,2016…
Immigration system is broken
The Obama Administration is granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Syrians who are currently living in the U.S. illegally. Under this program, the over 8,000 Syrians who illegally crossed the U.S. border or overstayed their visas can stay in the U.S. another 18 months and gain access to work permits and other legal documents.
Our immigration system is broken and the Obama administration will not fix it. The Holy Bible states in Ephesians 4:15, “But Speaking the truth in love…” It is too bad a number of people do not like to hear the truth.

Joe Pakootas is fighting for us
When Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Rep. Morton were praising Teck Cominco for their polluting the Columbia River and Lake Roosevelt, Joe Pakootas sued the Canadian firm and is responsible for a landmark decision to protect international boundaries and stopped the polluting of heavy metals into our rivers.
Cathy also voted in Congress to not hold Monsanto liable for the P.C.B.’s and runoff from their chemical product into the Spokane River. Was the fact that she was raised in Hazelton, British Columbia, and the chase for the almighty dollar what motivated her? Once again she received campaign contributions and left the clean-up to us.
Joe has been fighting for Eastern Washington and it’s people for decades! He is for us. Cathy is against us.
WAKE UP EASTERN WASHINGTON!

My First Amendment rights are under attack
I am writing this letter to express what is or is not going on in my environment of not only Chewelah, but America as a whole.
My name is Richard, I served in the United States Navy for twenty-one years and six months, and retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy. I am also a retired Deputy Sheriff from Yakima County, Washington. Overall, my experience protecting your rights and mine under the Constitution of the United States totals over thirty-four years.
Having spent the majority of my life defending these freedoms, I find it critical to practice them as they are outlined in the constitution of our country. Recently, I was counseled by my employer because a customer reported overhearing a political statement that they found offensive. Now, all store employees are prohibited from making political statements while on the job.
While one might think this is a proper decision for the store and its future, I do not. It is an attack on my First Amendment right to the freedom of speech. So, I will continue to be who I am. If I am fired for that, so be it. This is an issue that needs to be addressed and if my job is the price, I accept that. I will not give up my rights for anyone and will fight anyone who has the audacity to try and take them away. It is ingrained in my being and I will not give it up.

Voting should be our priority
The Independent on July 28 had a big article on the front page about how wonderful the new “Cash Crop” was for our environment. However, the reason I had bought the paper was to see how the election was progressing and especially what the paper had to report in regards to the Republican Party gathering. The gathering featured Bill Bryant, who is running for Governor of the state of Washington. After flipping and flipping and finally finding the article, I realized that the report on a potential future leader of our state was not important enough for the front page, or the second, or the third. It was buried on page ten! I was expecting the paper to say: “Vote, it doesn’t matter who or what you vote for, but vote.” Instead, drugs were deemed to be more important than the the political future of our state and nation. Naturally, I support the freedom of the press to choose this; however, I would assert that this choice reflects the current mentality of many Americans – that voting is not a priority.
However, voting is what our country is about. Voting is how you exercise your rights for a better future. Refusing to express that right, or trying to silence that right for others, will erode and destroy the foundation of the United States that myself and so many other have fought to protect.
God bless you all and God bless our country.
