In yet another blow to our supposed democratic model of government, the US Senate has voted down a bill that had would have made some changes to our existing gun laws. Among these changes was one which would have required stricter rules governing background checks on would-be purchasers of guns at gun shows and at online sites. In spite of numerous polls indicating that at least 75 percent of Americans favored this change, 46 US senators voted against the bill. To me, this is the clearest indicator yet of the decline of democracy in our country, as the will of the people is usurped by the powerful through the use of lobbyists, in this case the NRA. As Napoleon said, during his movement to gain absolute power after the French revolution, “Democracy is a game used by the strong to conceal their oligarchic rule.”
Let’s outlaw lobbyists and go back to calling “campaign contributions” what they really are, outright and highly offensive bribery.
