The Lead: Yeah, Gonzaga is going to win their first game

Gonzaga is good, SDSU is not

The best sporting event of the year is here! NCAA College basketball – the sport that nobody watches in the regular season – released their brackets on Sunday, giving Gonzaga a No. 1 seed in the west region! Time to go to Dick’s Burgers and celebrate!

What does this mean for Gonzaga? They play the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in the first round of the tournament.

See, this is why I love March Madness, you have to play teams with ridiculous mascots like the Jackrabbits. I want a Jackrabbit shirt now. How does one not root for the Jackrabbits?

South Dakota State

Well here’s one reason: they’re not going to beat Gonzaga. No Sir. The Bulldogs have a 93 percent chance of winning the matchup by some weird Google search engine calculator I saw so it must be legit. I bet you the seven percent is probably factoring in a terrible bus crash on the way to the arena.

Now, shocking, I don’t know much about the Jackrabbits, but South Dakota State finished sixth in their league during the regular season. How bad does that league have to be for a six seed to win its tournament? Well the same league that plays its postseason tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Yep. Sioux Falls. A whopping population of 178,500, which is smaller than Spokane and still the largest city in all of South Dakota. While the Pac-12 was playing in Vegas, the Big Sky was playing in Little Vegas (Reno) and the ACC was playing in Brooklyn – the Summit League was balling in a city with a skyline like this…

WOWEEEE, look at all them turn-of-the-century brick buildings. Yeehawwww. I’m totally making South Dakota mad right now, but when your state has fewer people than Montana you should probably reconsider your state status (Fun fact, Wyoming is this 52nd most populated state in the Union. How is this possible since we only have 50 states? Because Puerto Rico as a territory has more people than Wyoming. Come to think of it, Puerto Rico has more people than South Dakota as well. Throw in D.C. as well and Wyoming gets bumped to No. 52 – sadface.)

Anyways, the mighty Jackrabbits are 18-16 (WORLD-BEATERS!), while Gonzaga is 32-1 and 17-1 in the WCC (BLAME BYU). Gonzaga averages 84.6 points per game and shoot lights out most of the time. Good gravy.

For South Dakota State to win, they’re going to have to stop Gonzaga from shooting the ball at all, like not even once. SDSU ranks No. 62 nationally on offense and No. 307 on defense, while Gonzaga is ranked No. 10 on offense and No. 2 on defense – which, oh boy.

The Jackrabbits can take solace in the fact that they won their last matchup against Gonzaga – 88-78 – in 1956.

Since Eisenhower isn’t president anymore, I’m guessing we’re not going to see a score like that again. Coming into this matchup, the Jackrabbits are 23-point-underdogs which is, you know, a sizable amount.

Throw in that a No. 16 seed has never beaten a No. 1 seed and I think we have our preview for the Bulldogs’ first game:

Sean Spicer gets confronted in an Apple Store – You’d think they’d let the White House press secretary shop for a new iPhone in peace but somebody had to confront him and film it on their phone. Come to think of it, this is the most 2017 story of 2017. Like in the 1980s, nobody is going to confront Regan’s press secretary and film it on Betamax or something.

Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be running for Senate – The 69-year old movie start refuted a claim that he would run for a Senate seat in 2018.
