LaVern “Bill” Clark 1942-2017
LaVern William “Bill” Clark of Chewelah passed away on June 2, 2017 with his loving wife and daughter by his side. He was born on March 15, 1942 in Saginaw, Michigan to Orville “Fred” & Leola (Woods) Clark.
Bill was born and raised in Saginaw, MI where he attended school until age 16 where he began working for McDonalds. He worked his way up from the bottom rung as a lot boy, to supervisor, then manager and eventually co-owner in his own store years later. Bill met the love of his life, Joan Goss, at a McDonald’s where Joan’s brother Wayne worked. Wayne said he knows a redhead he should meet and Bill said “I don’t like redheads” then Wayne replied “Well you haven’t met my sister!” Bill asked Joan out for their first official date in May, and they would marry on September 28, 1962 in Saginaw, MI. He attended Hamburger University in 1964 while living in Saginaw. Bill and Joan had the opportunity to move to California where he would become co-owner in his own franchise store. While he was in California, he returned to school, earned his diploma and completed several years of college business courses.
Bill was an extremely generous and giving person, not only at work, but in his personal life as well. He was always concerned about other people’s welfare and needs. Bill was loved and respected by all of his employees and especially his loving family. Family was very important to Bill and this would result in trips back to visit extended family in Michigan. The family would also vacation up at Big Sur for many years during Christmas. One particular trip the family rented a houseboat on Clair Engle Lake (Trinity Lake) for a week that created many wonderful memories. His great work ethic, organization and level of respect became instilled in his children from an early age. He loved to play basketball and go swimming with his kids when they were young. Bill loved to fish, play the guitar, leatherwork and read, especially James Patterson novels. He had an uncanny ability to make people laugh and was very adept at telling the kids varying fables. Bill had a heart of gold and will be forever loved and missed by so many.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Joan; daughter, Kim Christiansen, Valley, WA, Son Robert (Cathy) Clark, Enumclaw, WA; grandchildren, Summer (Michael) Hanrahan Christiansen, Kodiak, AK, Kaitlyn Clark, Spokane, WA, Michael McBride, Spokane, WA; great grandchildren, Makala and Michael James; brother, Fredrick (Mary) Clark, Hemlock, MI and sister, Marilyn (Jim) Streets, Saginaw, MI.
