sports_volleyball_edwards35Going into this week, the Chewelah’s Lady Cougars had just one more chance to advance into this year’s district volleyball tournament. The Cougars played Riverside on Tuesday in a loser-out match to determine which of the two teams would survive. The winner would play Lakeside in the opening round of the tournament. For the loser, the season would come to an end.

The Lady Cougars concluded their league season last week with losses to Newport and Riverside. On Tuesday, they were defeated by the Grizzlies in three very close games: 25-21, 25-20, and 25-23. The Rams won Thursday’s match: 25-20, 25-18, and 25-22.

Rebekah Kenney led the Cougars at the net in both games. She hammered nine kills against Newport and another nine kills against Riverside.

Although she was sick through most of last week, Brittney Wuesthoff set 19 assists to Cougar hitters in each of last week’s games.

Katelyn Garner led Chewelah in digs in both games. She had 14 against Newport and five against Riverside.

Kaitlin Krouse had her best defensive night of the season against Newport with six blocks at the net. Against Riverside, Ryann Richmond and Wuesthoff each had two blocks.
