With leading scorer Brittney Wuesthoff sitting on the bench with a knee injury and steady rebounder Amanda Pugh at home with near-pneumonia, the shorthanded Lady Cougars were not at all ready to challenge the league-leading Freeman Scotties last Saturday night.
The undefeated Lady Scotties came to Chewelah with a 10-game winning streak, including a perfect 3-0 record in league play. They had been averaging close to 70 points per ballgame, and they were going to hit that target again against the Lady Cougars.
When the final buzzer sounded, Freeman had notched their eleventh straight win, 70-19, to remain on top of the current league standings with a 4-0 record.
Chewelah trailed at halftime, 47-7, and at the end of the third period by a 58-10 score.
Kaitlin Krouse was Chewelah’s high scorer with seven points. Sydnie Katzer had six.
At Springdale on Tuesday night, the Lady Cougars were not able to hold onto the lead down the final stretch, losing to the Chargers by a close 41-37 score. Chewelah was on top, 32-29 after three periods of play. The Chargers, however, finished strong in the last couple of minutes to take the lead and the win.
Without the scoring of Wuesthoff and the rebounding of Pugh, Chewelah was unable to hold onto the lead. Wuesthoff will be out of action for at least the next two weeks with a strained knee ligament. Pugh should return to the floor this week.
Katelyn Garner was Chewelah’s top scorer at Springdale with 11 points. Katzer and Krouse both scored eight points. Ryann Richmond finished the game with seven.
The Lady Cougars drove down to Medical Lake on Tuesday night to play the Cardinals. They will return home to play two games on Friday night and Tuesday night. The Lady Grizzlies from Newport will be here on Friday for a 7:30 game. Then, the Lady Bulldogs will come to Chewelah the following Tuesday for a game that is scheduled to start at 5:15
