Chewelah got back in the winners’ column last week when the Lady Cougars earned volleyball victories over Wellpinit and Kettle Falls.
On Tuesday, the Lady Cougars traveled to Wellpinit, where they defeated the Lady Redskins in three straight games. After getting off to a slow start, the Cougars finished strong to win the opening game by a 26-24 score. Then, they found their rhythm and won the next two games in short order, 25-14 and 25-15.
Savanah McMillin’s five kills topped Chewelah at the net and Brittney Wuesthoff set 17 assists to Cougar front row hitters. Atasha Edwards slammed two ace serves to add punch to the offense.
Katelin Garner led the Chewelah defensive effort with eight digs, and Kaitlyn Krouse had two blocks.
McMillin continued to be the big hitter for the Lady Cougars when the Kettle Falls Bulldogs came to town on Thursday. She hammered nine kills to lead Chewelah scorers.
Wuesthoff had one of her best nights of the season as she set a total of 22 assists.
Garner’s 14 digs highlighted the Cougar defensive performance, and Wuesthoff finished the match with two blocks.
However, the Cougars got off to another slow start against the Bulldogs, falling behind 9-0 early in the opening game. Although they lost that first game by a 25-17 score, the Cougars bounced right back to win the next three games: 25-17, 26-24, and 25-14.
The league win over Kettle Falls solidified Chewelah’s hold on fifth place in the standings with four conference encounters remaining on their schedule.
This Thursday night, the Cougars will host Freeman. On Thursday, they will travel to Medical Lake. Both matches begin at 6:30.
