Who would have believed that those Lady Cougars would open this basketball season with a pair of wins?
After defeating St. George’s in their season opener, the Lady Cougars pounced on Deer Park last Tuesday night for a 44-24 non-league win, their second in a row to start this season.
Playing aggressive defense, Chewelah held Deer Park to single-digit scoring in all four periods and a 24-point total for the night.
After an eight-all first period, Brittney Wuesthoff and Ryann Richmond teamed-up to put the Cougars into the lead for good. They led the Chewelah charge as the Lady Cougars outscored the Stags by a 13-2 margin in the second period and a 21-10 halftime lead.
The Lady Cougars continued to dominate the scoreboard in the third period as they battled to widen their lead to 39-16. Richmond, Wuesthoff and Katelyn Garner continued to score from the perimeter, while Amanda Pugh and Kaitlin Krouse combined for eight points on the inside.
In the fourth period, Deer Park outscored the Cougars 8-5, but Chewelah still walked away with the 20-point win, 44-24.
Wuesthoff led all scorers with 14 points. Richmond was also in double-digits with 10 points. Garner finished the game with nine points.
Chewelah’s winning streak came to an end on Saturday evening when they were nearly doubled-up by Northwest Christian, 49-25.
Playing their usually aggressive style of defense, the Lady Cougars were whistled for an unusually large number of fouls in the opening half. The results were double-damaging for Chewelah. They sent the Lady Crusaders to the free throw line to score 11 points. They also sent Lady Cougars to the bench with two fouls.
Pugh scored all seven of her team-high seven points in the first half. Richmond hit a long jumper, Sydnie Katzer put back a rebound, and Garner drove the paint for a layup. Chewelah trailed 26-13 at the intermission.
Katzer made two inside shots in the third period. Wuesthoff scored on a put-back, and Richmond made one of two free throw attempts.
Patty Hernandez made Chewelah’s only basket of the fourth period. Wuesthoff and Krouse added free throws.
In the end, Chewelah did not have enough height or fire power to compete with the Crusaders as they lost by a 49-24 score.
The Lady Cougars play four games prior to the upcoming Christmas break. They travel to Kettle Falls for their first league game of the season on Friday. On Saturday, they drive up to Colville. Next week, they host Riverside on Tuesday night and go to Lakeside on Friday.
