Katelyn Garner and Mikaela Hopkins combined for 17 points last Tuesday night as Chewelah’s Lady Cougars held on at Medical Lake to defeat the Lady Cardinals by a 33-30 in a low-scoring ballgame.
Garner scored nine points and Hopkins scored eight in a game where there were no double-digit scorers.
Chewelah watched its 18-11 halftime lead nearly evaporate in the third period as Medical Lake closed the gap to 23-21. However, the Cougars stayed on top to take home the win.
“It was a slow and deliberate game from start to finish,” said Coach Tom Skok. “Both teams pressed all the time, so there was not a lot of time left on the shot clock once we got into our half-court offense.
“In fact, Ryann (Richmond) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer at the end of the third period that they didn’t count. But, Ryann did make a gigantic three-pointer near the end of the game that we needed to win.”
To record their league win the Lady Cougars held Medical Lake’s leading scorer to only two points for the game.
“Kaitlin (Krouse) did a good job of defending her,” said Skok. “There were times when Amanda (Pugh) and Sydnie (Katzer) also had to guard her. All three of them pressured her really hard, and she scored only two points all night.”
With only a two-point lead going into the final period of play, the Lady Cougars had to stay out in front for the last eight minutes. And, they did. They outscored Medical Lake 10-9 and brought home the league win.

The lack of consistency by the Cougars on Friday night against Newport ended up costing them a loss to the visiting Grizzlies. The Lady Cougars had two productive periods and a pair of less profitable periods. Those two less lucrative periods eventually led to a 57-46 league loss.
With 6:48 remaining in the second period, Chewelah trailed 20-8. Then, suddenly, Katelyn Garner launched a pair of Oreo three-pointers, with Richmond adding the filling with another trey. Katzer hit an inside shot and Garner made a free throw. The 12-point run tied the game at 20-20 with 3:13 left to play in the period.
Newport scored the last two baskets of the period and regained the lead, 24-20, at halftime.
A third period slump left Chewelah on the short end of a 35-26 score going into the final eight minutes of the game. Richmond’s second three-pointer of the night was the lone basket made by the Cougars. Katzer made two free throws and Krouse dropped in another.
However, those six points were the only ones scored by Chewelah in the third period. The Lady Cougars were outscored 11-6 by Newport, which went into the final period with a nine-point lead.
Newport made 14 free throws in the fourth period. Meanwhile, Chewelah went through a three-minute stretch with only one point. The Lady Cougars trailed 47-29 when Krouse ended the drought with an inside shot. Katzer followed with two more close-range shots to bring the score to 51-37.
Garner went six-for-six from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the game. Hopkins also made both of her two attempts from the line. But, Newport held on for the 57-46 triumph.
Garner finished the game with 13 points to earn top gun honors for Chewelah. Katzer was also in double-digits with 12 points. Mikaela Hopkins had nine.
The Lady Cougars play two games this weekend. They will travel to Riverside on Friday night at 5:15. Then, they will host Lakeside here on Saturday afternoon at 3:00.
