An offender from Airway Heights Corrections Center was killed i a logging accident on Oct. 15 while working with a Department of Natural Resoruces work crew in Stevens County.
The offender, Danny R. Bergeson, 22, was electrocuted while cutting a small tree near a power line on Cemetery Road near Springdale. members of the work crew and medical units performed CPR. Bergeson was pronounced dead at about 12:15 p.m.
Airway Heights has four 10-offender work crews that work with the Department of Natural Resources to fight and prevent wildfires, and tree thinning. This is the first fatality or serous injury involving an offender on an Airway Heights work crew.
Bergeson, who was living a in a minimum-custody unit, was serving a prison sentence after being convicted in Skagit County of attempting to elude a police vehicle. He was scheduled to complete his prison sentence on Jan. 28, 2013. The Department of Corrections notified his relatives.
Airway Heights, located near Spokane, houses about 2,200 minumum and medium-custody offenders.
