STILL ON TOP: Grooms has yet to taste defeat as a Cougar this year…
Josh Grooms remains as the lone Chewelah tennis player undefeated in league matches after last week’s encounters with Lind-Ritzville and Wilbur-Creston. Even Grooms had lost the second set of number one singles against the Wildcats and had to come back to win the decisive third set. After blanking his opponent 6-0 in the opening set, he was beaten in the second set 6-3 to tie the match. However, he retook control of the court in the third set for a 6-3 win. Later in the week, Grooms shut out his Bronco opponent 6-0 and 6-0 as he and the Cougar boys’ team remained unbeaten.
It was the Chewelah girls’ team that unexpectedly took a couple of hard hits a week ago. All three of the Lady Cougar’s singles players fell prey to the Broncos and Wildcats to absorb their first team losses of the league season. Karilee DesAutel lost her first match in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-2, in number one singles play against Lind-Ritzville. After winning the first set 6-4, Hailey Crise was beaten 6-3 and 6-0 in the following sets of number three singles. So, with Jenny Kiefer having to forfeit her singles match because of an ankle sprain, Chewelah’s singles trio was swept by the Broncos.
Both girls’ doubles teams won. Brionna Martin and Ava Hartill won in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0. Madison Siegel and Taylor Erickson won the first set 6-2, but had to come from behind to win the second set by a 7-5 score.
Against Wilbur-Creston, the Lady Cougars ran into a similar brick wall, losing all three singles matches. DesAutel lost her matches by twin 6-3 scores. Crise was beaten 6-0 and 6-2. Erickson moved up to play the number three singles match and was defeated 7-5 and 6-2.
In boys’ action, Juston Hyden was all business in winning the number two singles match, 6-0 and 6-1. Moving up into the number three singles slot, Myles Kresik lost by tie-breaker in the opening set and was beaten 6-4 in the second set.
The Chewelah boys’ doubles teams both won their matches. Keith Justice and Joe Dreiszus won in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2. Ben Frizzell and Tim Kamm won 6-0 and 6-1.
With the two wins, the Cougar boys remain undefeated in league play.
Justice and Dreiszus competed in the Inland Empire Tournament over the weekend, winning two of four matches. DesAutel also won two of her four matches. A total of 53 schools competed in the tournament that was spread over several high schools in Spokane and the Spokane Valley.
League coaches will meet this week to seed players into the upcoming district tournament. Top players will advance to the regional tournament.
